The College of Health and Human Services Alumni Affiliate, in partnership with The College of Health and Human Services Social Work Program, invite you to a continuing education program from 9 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. EST on Wednesday, March 24.
Dr. Janet Hoy-Gerlach, LISW-S, Ph.D., associate professor in the UToledo Social Work Program, will present the CE program, "Understanding Legal and Ethical Issues in Mandated Animal Abuse Reporting in Ohio."
Dr. Hoy-Gerlach has more than 20 years of experience in community mental health service delivery. She is an advocate of recognizing and supporting the bonds between people and animals as client strengths within social work practice, as well as across settings and populations. Dr. Hoy-Gerlach's current research is focused on the health benefits of the human-animal bond, specifically as related Emotional Support Animals (ESAs).
She has trained and presented nationally and internationally on ESAs and has served as an expert witness on ESAs for the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Department. As an advisor to Ohio Animal Advocates, Dr. Hoy-Gerlach has provided expert testimony on animal abuse reporting in social work practice for Ohio legislative hearings. She helped develop the Hope and Recovery Pet Program, which places shelter animals as ESAs through a unique collaboration between ProMedica, the Toledo Humane Society and The University of Toledo, one of the only such programs in the Nation.
Objectives of the CE program include:
- Participants will be able to give at least two examples of "The LInk" between violence toward animals and violence toward people.
- Participants will be able to explain how animal cruelty reporting relates to the social work profession's ethical responsibilities to clients and society.
- Participants will be able to describe the mandated animal cruelty reporting responsibilities for social workers in Ohio, under House Bill 33.
- Participants will be able to summarize the reporting process for animal cruelty, including locating the appropriate animal welfare authority to report to.
The CE program is approved by the State of Ohio Counselor Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board, provider number RSX10030 for social worker CEs, and will meet the ethics requirement for social work licensure. Attendees must be present for the entire three-hour program if they are interested in receiving CE credit. An evaluation form will be emailed immediately following the program concludes. Certificates will be sent electronically upon receipt of the evaluation.
When we receive your registration, you will be emailed a link to the program.
This virtual program is free to current UToledo Alumni Association members, social work field supervisors and instructors, and current UToledo students. Non-members will be charged $5, which will go towards the Connie Schondel Memorial Fund. The fund supports student activities in social work, including scholarships, travel and other activities.
